This study investigates the long-term operational reliability of high-power ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (HP UV-LEDs) as the excitation source for real-time, non-contact fluoro-sensing systems aimed at identifying hydrocarbon pollutants in freshwater environments. Fluorescence is recognized as a potent method for detecting and characterizing hydrocarbons. HP UV-LEDs present significant advantages over traditional light sources, such as xenon and mercury lamps, thereby facilitating the creation of a cost-effective, compact system designed for continuous, real-time environmental monitoring. This research examines critical factors including wavelength, output optical power, and the impacts of water pollutant viscosity and temperature on the long-term functionality of the HP UV-LEDs.

To assess their durability, we conducted temperature Accelerated Life Tests (ALTs) on two types of 365 nm HP UV-LEDs under two operational conditions: continuous working (24/7) and cyclical working (30 seconds ON and 30 seconds OFF). Results indicate an estimated mean life of 6200 hours for continuous operation and an impressive 66,000 hours for cyclical operation, translating to over seven years of reliable hydrocarbon monitoring. Furthermore, the study evaluates the resilience of these systems against internal and external variations, underscoring their potential for long-term environmental applications.
