Hey friends! Today, we’re diving into some important advocacy efforts aimed at improving sleep health and ensuring that everyone has access to necessary treatments. If you’re a sleep provider or part of a facility, your voice matters, and we encourage you to take part in these initiatives!
Get Involved in the “Act on Actigraphy” Campaign
Have you heard about the “Act on Actigraphy” campaign? It’s all about highlighting the significance of actigraphy testing for diagnosing sleep disorders. Unfortunately, many insurance providers still classify actigraphy as “experimental” and don’t reimburse for it. This creates a major barrier for patients who could really benefit from this type of assessment. We’re reaching out to both private and public payers, like CMS, to push for changes that would allow actigraphy to be reimbursed as a standalone service. You can help by downloading a template letter and urging payors to update their policies – it’s all backed by solid medical literature. Dr. Jessica Thompson explains how crucial it is to have coverage for actigraphy and how you can join in raising awareness.
Addressing PAP Therapy Reimbursement Issues
Another issue we’re tackling is with Blue Shield of California, which has been denying reimbursement for PAP therapy when only one respiratory monitoring belt is used during diagnostic sleep studies. This goes against established clinical practice guidelines. If you want to help, you can download a customizable letter to request a policy update that aligns with recognized standards.
Aligning Hypopnea Scoring Criteria
While many payers have adopted the recommended hypopnea scoring criteria, some still require a stricter definition that isn’t in line with the latest recommendations. We’ve got a template letter ready for you to personalize and send to these payers, asking them to update their definitions. Remember, if you’re treating patients under these outdated requirements, it might be helpful to score using both criteria.
Advocating for Insomnia Treatment Coverage
Many private payers have insurance policies that don’t reflect the latest guidelines for insomnia treatment. With the new AASM guidelines in place, it’s time to urge these payers to review and modify their policies to better align with evidence-based practices. Click here to take action!
Correct Coding for Treatment-Emergent Central Sleep Apnea
Some EHR vendors and payers are requesting the wrong diagnosis code for Treatment-Emergent Central Sleep Apnea, leading to confusion and potential reimbursement issues. You can help by sending a letter requesting that they update their coding practices to reflect the proper code as outlined in the ICSD-3.
Addressing Narcolepsy Medication Reimbursement
Many insurance providers also have policies that deny coverage for concomitant medications for treating narcolepsy. Since excessive daytime sleepiness is a common symptom of narcolepsy, it’s essential that providers have the flexibility to adjust treatments as needed. You can personalize a letter to request that these policies be revisited.
